Economics has been taught at East West University (EWU) since 1998. The Department of Economics offers both undergraduate and graduate programs to train students in the methods and ideas of modern economics. The EWU Department of Economics faculty members conduct both basic and applied research in economics, and is ranked as the leading economics research department in Bangladesh.
The economics program is one of the most popular undergraduate majors at the university. A degree in economics can bring many rewards such as providing a pathway to a diverse set of career opportunities and offering a means of engaging in many of society’s most pressing issues. The two graduate programs (Masters in Economics and Masters in Development Studies) are designed to train students as research economists and economic professionals, putting them in a good position to understand and participate in public policy debates.
Distinguished in their specialties, the department’s faculty members are often sought out for their expertise. The intellectual life in the Department is centered around a weekly research seminar by faculty members to expose students to a continuous weekly flow of knowledge from researchers. The Department is in the process of creating a research institute to collaborate faculty research work with industry and think-tanks.
Currently, approximately 500 students join the EWU economics programs each year. The Department has 20 faculty members who teach in diverse areas of theoretical and applied economics. The Department’s website provides upto-date information on department courses and seminar, and links to webpages of faculty members.
