Emeritus Professor of the University of Dhaka, Serajul Islam Choudhury believes that the ongoing social system is unjust and moribund. According to him, people in power in our society tend to suppress three qualities–knowledge, intellect and the capacity to do good for others. And they do so through the media. He expressed these views in the Nehreen Khan Memorial Speech delivered on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at East West University (EWU), Aftabnagar, Dhaka. In his lecture Dr. Serajul Islam Choudhury also observed that while the independence of our country saw power transferred from foreigners to local rulers, the power structure still remained same. On the question of language, he said that at present English is even more dominant than Bangla was in the British period. In order to get rid of the evils of present-day society, he suggested that citizens, especially intellectuals, should pursue the path of disinterested knowledge, cultivate their intellect and display kindheartedness instead of self-interest.
This lecture was organized in the memory of a deceased former student of East West University, Nehreen Khan, daughter of Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, former adviser to the caretaker government of Bangladesh. On this occasion, Professor Dr. Serajul Islam Choudhury was honored with a crest and a cheque amounting to one Lakh Taka.
Professor Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan, Vice-Chancellor, EWU presided over the program. Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, Dr. Fakrul Alam, Professor of Dhaka University, A.Z.M. Shafiqul Alam, Treasurer of EWU, Late Nehreen Khan’s classmates were also among those present in the program along with other dignitaries.
