Department of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Club of East West University organized a poster presentation on “Impact of Pharmaceutical Waste on Environment and its Management” on 22 December at the university auditorium.
Mr. Akhter Matin Chaudhury, Chairman and Managing Director of Nuvista Pharma Ltd was present as the chief guest of the event while Dr. Sufia Islam, Chairperson, Department of Pharmacy, inaugurated the event. In his speech, Mr. Chaudhury highly appreciated the level of enthusiasm displayed by the students. He said that disposal of pharmaceutical waste is very important. It is a social issue and goes beyond the pharmaceutical companies. Furthermore he believed that even if we can achieve a fraction of what the students proposed, we have a good future lying ahead of us. He also emphasized public awareness and intervention of the Government in this matter.
Professor Dr. Chowdhury Faiz Hossain, Dean, faculty of Science and Engineering was also present in this presentation where a total of fourteen groups participated with the aim to create awareness about the impact of pharmaceutical waste on environment and the preventive strategies that we can undertake. They discussed about the undesired consequences of improper waste disposal on drinking water, aquatic life, human health and others. The event ended with the announcement of the names of the winners. “Green Pharmacy Program”, “Plasma Arc: Healthcare Wastes to Energy” and “Health and Safety Practices for Healthcare Personnel and Waste Workers” stood first, second and third respectively. The faculty members of Pharmacy Department were present at the event.
