East West University Library organized a day long ‘workshop on Health Information Literacy (WHIL)’ on 20 July 2012 at the East West University Library. This was the 3rd/ last phase of the series of IFLA sponsored International Workshop on Health Information Literacy (IWHIL) 2011.
Professor Ahmed Shafee, Vice Chancellor, East West University was present as the Chief Guest in the inaugural ceremony of the workshop at 9.30 AM in the East West University Library. To express the significance of health information literacy among the participants, he said that health literacy is essential for maintaining a healthy body. However, this literacy does not mean only knowing about rules of hygiene and good health but also motivation to apply the information in out lives.
In his speech as the special guest as well as the lead resource person, Mr. Kazi Ali Reza, Officer-in-Charge, United Nations Information Centres (UNIC), emphasized the need for promoting health information literacy from grass-root level to top level stakeholders in the country. The eminent professor Dr. Jagtar Singh, Department of Library and Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala (India) gave a brief introduction about the workshop through online video conferencing.
Md. Anwarul Islam, Assistant Professor, Department of Information Science & Library Management, University of Dhaka, Md. Nazmul Hasan, Assistant Professor, Department of Information Science & Library Management, Rajshahi University, Dr. Reshad Agazi (Eye Specialist), Bepin Behary Karmakar, Principle Librarian, BIRDEM Library, Ahmed Wasimul Bari, Consultant & Advisor Mark Invention, Minhaj Uddin Ahmed, part time lecturer, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka also graced the occasion as resource persons.
A total of 27 participants from public and private universities including Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), North South University, Eastern University, Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences and other institutions of this country took hands on training on health information literacy.
The closing ceremony of the workshop was held on the same day in which Professor Bijoy P. Barua (PhD), Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, East West University was present as the Chief Guest. In his speech, he urged the participants to use their learned knowledge to create a healthy society. M Azizur Rahman, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Bangladesh National Museum and Former Chief Information Commissioner of Bangladesh was present as the special guest. Dilara Begum, Librarian of EWU, said that workshops like this would contribute greatly to develop a good and healthy nation. At the end of the programme, she proposed a vote of thanks to all the resource persons and participants as well as the workshop organizing committee for making the whole session a successful event.
