The department of EEE organized a seminar on July 25, 2016 at 3:30 PM titled “Design of Electric Motors for Electric, Hybrid, and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles”. The speaker, Dr. Khwaja M. Rahman is the Technical Fellow and the Technical Lead of the Electromagnetic Machine Design Group of General Motors (GM) Global Electrification division, USA. He has received several awards from GM including the most prestigious Boss Kettering award for his innovations in the Chevy Volt electrical propulsion system. He has received first and second prize paper awards from IEEE Industry Applications Society. He has written more than sixty journal and conference papers and is co-inventor of more than fifty US patents.
The seminar was attended by faculty members and more than 100 students. In the seminar, Dr. Khwaja talked about the different types of motors used in electric and hybrid vehicles. He discussed the specifications of motors in vehicles and how different motors are designed to meet the specifications. He also brushed on the topic of motor controllers and how higher control efficiency and microprocessor controls allow for the use of ac motors in vehicles. The seminar was followed by a short yet enthusiastic discussion session with the interested students.
