BANGLADESH KICK-STARTS 5TH JESSUP BANGLADESH NATIONAL VIRTUAL ROUND - 2021 THROUGH ITS INAUGURATION CEREMONY

Feb 18, 2021

With the aim of continuing to help reduce the knowledge gap among different legal systems of the world and bring together law students committed to practice, promote, and profess the principles of international law, Jessup Bangladesh kick-starts its ‘5th Jessup Bangladesh National Virtual Round’ of the 62nd Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2021 through the virtual inauguration ceremony that took place on the afternoon of 11 February 2021.

This year, the National Round is being organized by Jessup Bangladesh in association with International Law Students Association Bangladesh, partnered with the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training - US Department of Justice. The National Round is hosted and sponsored by East West University, and co-sponsored by Old Bailey Chambers and Bangladesh Intellectual Property Forum.

A total of 30 teams with more than 140 law students from universities all over the country, both within and beyond the Capital Dhaka, are participating this year as observing and competing teams in the National Rounds.

Ambassador Earl R. Miller, His Excellency US Ambassador to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chief Guest of the inauguration ceremony, delivered his welcoming address.

Lesley Benn, Executive Director, International Law Students Association, through a recorded message, extended her high regards and best wishes for the competition.

Sharing how mooting helps in further enhancing the art of advocacy within a law student beyond the books and literature of the law schools, AM Amin Uddin, the honourable Attorney General for Bangladesh commended the young generation.

Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chief Adviser, East West University and the Special Guest of the Ceremony expressed his high hopes and well wishes for the participants of the competition and a successful implementation of the National Rounds.

ABM Hamidul Misbah, Managing Partner, Old Bailey Chambers expressed his high regards and appreciation towards the competitors on behalf of his chamber as well as Bangladesh Intellectual Property Forum.

Nuran Chowdhury, founding National Administrator, Jessup Bangladesh & National Coordinator, ILSA Chapters-Bangladesh, voiced his heartfelt gratitude towards the dignitaries.

ASM Sayem Ali Pathan, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh & National Administrator of Jessup Bangladesh National Round 2021, shared his vote of thanks.

Professor Muhammad Ziaulhaq Mamun, Pro-Vice Chancellor, East West University chaired the inauguration ceremony and after expressing his vote of thanks, he officially inaugurated the ceremony.

Over the decades since 1960, the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition retained its nickname as the World Cup of Mooting through its overwhelmingly rich pool of international law students, enthusiasts and professionals from all over the world.

To note, the Jessup Problem this year brings forth a very timely concern of a global pandemic, and the obligations and responses of States with respect to such an outbreak. In addition to addressing the questions of the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in this regard, international law issues relating to a desperate claim for political asylum by an alleged rogue scientist, and State responsibility for a suspicious aircraft explosion will also be argued upon by the mooting participants.
