Closing Ceremony of Week-Long Program of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, 2019 by the Department of Information Studies and Library Management, East West University

Department of Information Studies and Library Management, East West University celebrated the eighth annual Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) week, 2019 through a week long programs that started on 24th October 2109.  The week-long celebration of the Global MIL Week ended on 31 October 2019 with the closing ceremony. The closing ceremony was divided into two segments: first part was a technical session on the theme “Media and Information Literate Citizens: Informed, Engaged and Empowered” where honorable Dr. Dilara Begum, Chairperson, Department of Information Studies and Library Management conducted the session as the moderator. At the beginning of the session, she addressed the main theme of the session. Venerated Dr. M Aslam Alam, Chairman and Executive Director, Institute for Information Literacy and Sustainable Development attended the session as the Keynote Speaker. On the keynote speech, the speaker discussed about the competencies to identify the fake news. He mentioned media and information literacy as a set of competencies to search, find, evaluate, use and disseminate information and media content. He considers the sated issue as a lifelong skillset that meaningfully impacts every person’s education, career, civic engagement, and personal life. Panel discussion session was followed by the keynote speech where Professor Dr. Md. Nasiruddin, Dean, School of Undergraduate StudiesNational University, Bangladesh and respected Dr. Kazi Mostak Gausul HoqProfessor and Chairperson, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka shared their insights on the keynote. Closing and prize giving ceremony were in the second part of the program where Dr. Dilara Begum gave the program overview for the week-long celebration. Prizes were given to the winners who got places in quiz competition that was held at the morning of the same day. At the end of the program, Dr. Fouzia Mannan, Honorable Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, East West University gave the concluding remarks as the program chair. The program was attended by honorable deans from different faculties, faculty members, students, information professionals from different institutions.
