East West University is going to introduce a Japanese Language Course

East West University (EWU) is set to expand its academic horizons with the upcoming introduction of a comprehensive Japanese language course. The decision was formalized during a high-level meeting held on 24 June 2026, at the EWU Board room. The meeting was attended by the university’s top leadership, including Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro Vice Chancellor, Air Cdre (retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer, Mashfiqur Rahman, Registrar, EWU, Dr. Akhter Jahan, Chairperson of the Department of English, among other key stakeholders.
The 3-credit course will operate under the University’s Foreign Language Center and will be coordinated by the Department of English as an open general course. In an effort to foster global communication skills and enhance career readiness, the course will be an optional course for students across all departments.
EWU has appointed Mr. Okabayashi Kuniaki to conduct the program as an adjunct Professor. Bringing a wealth of local and international experience, Mr. Kuniaki has been living in Bangladesh for 18 years and currently serves as a part-time faculty member in Japanese Studies at the University of Dhaka. Apart from Mr. Okabayashi Kuniaki, the meeting was attended by Professor Dr. Mohammad Khorshed Alam, former President of The Japanese Universities Alumni Association in Bangladesh (JUAAB), Mr. Mahboob Zaman, Managing Director of DataSoft Ltd. In this context, Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin expressed his hope that EWU students will seize the opportunity to learn a third language, such as Japanese, to enhance their employment prospects.
The course will be officially offered to EWU students very soon, upon receiving final approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.
