East West University Pays Tribute to Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam

The Department of English, East West University, paid tribute to the late Emeritus Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam in a condolence program on Thursday. Professor Islam, who was an eminent scholar, esteemed educator, and distinguished literary and art critic, served at Dhaka University for more than 40 years. Professor Islam’s contribution to academia and intellectual arena has been immense.
The event was graced by Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, and Professor Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of East West University. Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin spoke with great admiration for Professor Islam’s brilliance as an intellectual. Professor Shams Rahman delivered his speech, reflecting on Professor Islam’s charisma as a great personality.
Dr. Fakrul Alam, Advisor and Professor, Department of English, shared personal anecdotes and fond memories of his life-long friendship with Professor Islam. Guest speaker Dr. Sarker Hasan Al Zayed, a former student, highlighted Professor Islam’s profound contributions to Bengali literature. Another former student, Dr. Rubana Haq, now the Vice Chancellor of the Asian University for Women, commemorated her teacher through a video message, expressing deep gratitude for his mentorship and influence. Mr. Kamrul Hassan, Poet and Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, spoke of Professor Islam’s charm, wit, and erudition.
Dr. Farzana Akhter, Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, also spoke on the occasion, reiterating Professor Islam’s kindness and generosity as an educator. The Chair of the Department of English, Dr. Akhter Jahan, emphasized in her concluding remark Professor Islam’s enduring legacy. The program concluded with an homage to Professor Islam through a touching videography montage celebrating the scholar’s life, work, and impact on students, fans, and fellow scholars of different generations.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor and the Treasurer, East West University, who also spoke, were present, alongside faculty members, students, and invited guests.
