EWUCRT Hosts a Research Seminar on Machine Learning and IoT Network Security

Aug 06, 2026

The East West University Center for Research and Training (EWUCRT), hosted its 139th research seminar on 06 August 2026 at the EWUCRT Seminar Room. The research proposal presentation was titled "Optimizing Lightweight Machine Learning-Based Intrusion Detection Systems for Secure IoT Networks."

The seminar focused on resolving critical security challenges in Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems through optimized, resource-efficient machine learning algorithms. On behalf of the research team, Dr. Atiqur Rahman, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at EWU, presented the project proposal to an audience of faculty members, scholars, and students.

The research proposal addresses the growing vulnerability of IoT networks by proposing lightweight intrusion detection systems (IDS). By tailoring machine learning models to run efficiently on low-power IoT hardware without compromising detection accuracy, the project aims to enhance threat mitigation across connected devices.

The collaborative research team comprises faculty members from EWU’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering:

  • Dr. Atiqur Rahman, Assistant Professor
  • Dr. Md. Nawab Yousuf Ali, Professor
  • Dr. Maheen Islam, Professor and Chairperson of CSE
  • Mr. Shartaz Sajid Nahid, Lecturer
  • Mr. Md. Arman Hossain, Lecturer
  • Ms. Proma Chowdhury, Lecturer

The seminar commenced with opening remarks by Professor Dr. Md. Sohel Rana, Executive Director of EWUCRT. The session was chaired by Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of East West University.

Following the presentation, Professor Dr. Ahmed Wasif Reza, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, served as the key discussant, providing expert analysis on the technical feasibility and broader applications of the proposed system. The event transitioned into an interactive Q&A session where attendees discussed implementation challenges and algorithmic optimization in IoT security. The program concluded with closing commentary and a formal vote of thanks delivered by the Chair, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman.

Among the distinguished attendees were Professor Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU, alongside faculty members, researchers, and officials from EWUCRT.
