Nov 27, 2025

East West University Law Clinic has organized seminar titled "Navigating Artificial Intelligence in the Legal Domain: Opportunities, Barriers and Strategic Pathways" Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the Jalaluddin Ahmed Lecture Gallery (Room 354). The event featured keynote speech by Dr. Mohammad Ershadul Karim, Associate Professor at University of Malaya, Malaysia, a global expert on law and technology. The honorable Vice Chancellor of the East West University, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman embellished the chair of the Chief Guest.

The seminar commenced with the welcome remarks by Dr. Nabaat Tasnima Mahbub, Chairman and Associate Professor, Department of Law, East West University, who set the tone by highlighting the importance of understanding artificial intelligence's impact on the legal profession. Following the welcome speech, Mr. Sayeed Hossain Sarwar, Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, East West University and Coordinator, EWU Law Clinic delivered a comprehensive recap of the journey and milestones of the East West University Law Clinic. He highlighted the clinic’s growth, activities and significant achievements from Spring 2023 till Fall 2025.

The Chief Guest, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman reflected on the rapid evolution of legal education and importance of equipping students with knowledge of emerging technologies essential for future lawyers. His remarks encouraged students to critically engage with both the opportunities and challenges posed by technological developments.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Mohammad Ershadul Karim delivered a comprehensive overview of artificial intelligence as both a technical and social development. Dr. Karim introduced core concepts of AI, its philosophical and historical roots, and discussed key regulatory, ethical, and practical dilemmas in applying AI within the legal system. He drew upon global and regional developments and highlighted the need for national strategies and anticipatory regulation of technology, urging the audience that "AI is an enabler and not the solution for all; use of AI may be optional yet, but understanding is mandatory." An interactive session followed, allowing students to engage with Dr. Karim and the panel. The discussion included practical case studies and group activities that explored how AI technologies can both disrupt and enhance legal processes ranging from data analytics and legal research to ethical decision-making and client advocacy. Student feedback reflected strong appreciation for the seminar’s clarity and depth, particularly its focus on bridging the knowledge gap between legal theory and technology application.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Mr. Ali Mashraf, Lecturer, Department of Law, East West University, who appreciated the insights of the keynote speaker and chief guest, acknowledged the active involvement of faculty and students, and emphasized the Department's commitment to remaining at the forefront of legal education reform.
